If I follow God’s rules I will be rewarded in heaven and the chance to multiply…I’m not sure what that means, but I know good things are going to happen to those who apply His law to their lives.
Above is an entry from my journal after reading a passage of scripture from the bible.
The passage was Deuteronomy 30 and Moses was delivering a message to the Israelites. The message was that they had a choice to make. Would they choose obedience or disobedience to the commands God was giving them? To choose obedience would entail blessings, prosperity, and multiplication. However, if they chose to disobey they would be destroyed.
The chapter ends by explaining that the reality of the choice they would make would be the difference between life or death.
This is the same choice that Eve was faced with in the garden of Eden. Would she obey God and live or disobey God and die?
Sadly Eve chose to disobey, and so did I two years later when I decided to rebel against God. My choice led to many difficult consequences. (Read more about my testimony here.) I now choose obedience willingly because of that drastic turning point. I look around at what I have been blessed with and truly testify that life is better when we obey God.
As I penned those words above I had no direction for my life, but I was drawn to the promises God was making to these people. I wanted to be blessed. I wanted to have a family. I wanted to live the greatest version available of my life, and God was telling me how.
God speaks to us through the Bible, and inside are the exact details on how we can live our best life.
We were created to bring glory to God. This is another way to say we reflect the image of God or our lives were made to point others to Him. When we obey Him we reflect God’s goodness. As we choose to make decisions according to His word and honor Him He blesses us. He multiplies us. He prospers us. We live an abundantly full life that reflects the goodness of God to those around us. This does not mean that our lives will be easy, but it does mean that God will always be there when we need Him for every single thing we come up against. When we obey God we live our best lives.
On the flip side of this, when we disobey God we don’t live at all. God cannot lie. He cannot act outside of His character defined in His word. When we disobey He justly corrects us. He disciplines us. And if we refuse to repent and turn away from our poor choices He will allow us to be brought low. This display of power over sin in our lives still greatly testifies and glorifies Him, but we get destroyed in the process. Disobedience equals death.
The thing about God’s glory is that He gets it no matter which choice we make. He will be glorified in our obedience or His power will be shown through our correction.
I did not know much about God when I wrote the above entry, but that didn’t matter. I had everything I needed for my best life because I had His word. As it says in Deuteronomy 30:11-14:
‘Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach. It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask, “Who will ascend to heaven to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?” Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, “Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?” No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it.”.
Let us realize what I did years ago when I sat down to write this entry -obeying God is a much better way to live than disobeying Him. Read His word daily and choose to obey. Therein lies how to live your best life.
