Genesis 49 What to Expect

Chapter of the Day: Read Genesis 49.

Meditate on Genesis 49:33 “When Jacob had finished giving instructions to his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed, breathed his last and was gathered to his people.”

Before Jacob’s last breath he had one last task to accomplish. Jacob went through each son name by name. He told them each what to expect in the days to come.

Some sons were rebuked, some sons were blessed, and some were given instructions. Jacob prophesied over each son that would go on to become the twelve tribes of Israel, and then he left them with instructions concerning his burial. When Jacob was finished he passed away and his work was complete.

God has done the same thing for me and you. He has laid out each and every detail of what is to come in His word to us. He has poured out His Spirit to equip us with wisdom and strength to make the decisions that bring Him glory and bless us abundantly.  He has not left us to figure things out on our own. When we choose to live our lives according to God’s word we can trust His plans for us will be good and give us a future of hope.

Prayer: God thank you that you love me enough to leave me the details of your plan for my life all I have to do is open up the bible. God thank you that you’ve given me Jesus and I can choose to follow Him and experience a full and abundant life. Lord help me choose that fruitful life even when it isn’t necessarily the easiest, most popular, or convenient choice. God thank you that you know my deeds. Lord keep showing me the areas that you can’t use in me and help me surrender those things to you. Grow and strengthen your spirit in me Lord so that through my life others see your goodness and faithfulness. God finish the work you started in me just like you did with Jacob. In Jesus’ name, amen.

What stands out about the blessings received by the tribe of Judah and the tribe of Joseph?

How does Jacob’s knowledge of each of these tribes foreshadow God’s righteous judgment for His children (Romans 2:6-7)?

Memorize  Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”
