Chapter of the Day: Read Genesis 47.
Meditate on Genesis 47:27 “Now the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen. They acquired property there and were fruitful and increased greatly in number.”
Joseph was the second in command in all of the land yet he still took his brothers before Pharoah. They told Pharoah that they were shepherds and have come to escape the severity of the famine.
Pharoah meets Jacob and blessed him and they left to settle in the best part of the land. The rest of the chapter goes into great detail about the severity of the famine. It is recorded that Egypt and Canaan wasted away. However, the Israelites flourished and were fruitful.
The chapter concludes with the death of Jacob who lived an additional seventeen years. Joseph ensured his father that he would lay him to rest in Canaan with his fathers.
The Egyptians labeled shepherds as detestable, but with Joseph, as their representative, they were allowed to thrive in the finest part of Egypt during a time of scarcity. Isn’t it the same true for you and me? Because Jesus is our representative we too are allowed to possess the land before us. We are greatly provided for and protected so we can increase, but it isn’t only for our good. No, we get to serve and be a blessing to those around us as we develop into the great nation God has called us to be.
Prayer: God thank you that you sent Jesus before me to represent me. He paved the way so that I can bring your kingdom on earth. Thank you that with Jesus as my representative I get to be a lowly servant who is cared for by a master of abundance. God, you are good to me, better than I deserve. Help me remember that it is not only for my gain. Lord help me to be a blessing to those around me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
How would the nation of Israel fared had God not sent Joseph before them to Egypt?
How might the Egyptians have received this family of shepherds had Joseph not been there to represent them?
Has there ever been a time when your affiliation with a certain person got you certain benefits?
How does Jesus represent us to God?
Memorize Hebrews 9:24 “For Christ did not enter into a holy place made with human hands, which is only a copy of the true one in heaven. He entered into heaven itself to appear now before God on our behalf.”
