Meditate on Genesis 24:3-4 “I want you to swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among who I am living, 4 but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac.”
Abraham is aging and needs to prepare Isaac to take over where he will leave off in the journey to inheriting the promised land. He begins his mission by sending his entrusted servant to gather a wife from his native land for Isaac. Abraham makes it very clear that Isaac is not to go back to the land of his father. However, he wants Isaacs’s wife to be from his father’s clan and not the Canaanite women.
The servant seals the oath with Abraham and returns with Isaac’s wife Rebekah. God had gone before him along the way, revealing Rebekah, granting him favor with her and her family, and returning home safely with a willing bride.
This story is a beautiful foretelling of our roles in God’s redemption story. What a gift to know that God pursues us and returns us as His flawless bride to His son Jesus. And what a delight that He allows us to serve Him to take part in retrieving His people. We get to be the servant and the bride. He lavishes His gifts and stops at nothing to prove that He loves you and me. Nothing but the best for His chosen son and His bride. Let us look forward to the day when we are fully reunited as the bride of Christ in our Father’s kingdom, and until then let us respond as the faithful servant lovingly pointing people to His Son.
Prayer: God thank you so much that you spared nothing to have me. God thank you that you now allow me to share that with your people. God help me just like the servant in the story to go, even at the possibility of rejection, to tell people (your bride) about the kingdom you have gone to prepare for them. God let that reality sink in with me Lord. Let it overflow onto those around me. Draw them to you, Lord. Prepare their hearts. I can’t wait to be reunited with you forever in heaven. In Jesus’s name amen.
Application: When asked to share the gospel/ your testimony what is your biggest fear? Do you fear that people will reject what you say like Abraham’s servant?...”What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land?” …(Genesis 25:5)
What ways did God meet Abraham’s servant as he went in obedience in spite of rejection?
Memorize Isaiah 65:24 ” I will answer them before they even call to me. While they are still talking about their needs, I will go ahead and answer their prayers.
