Meditate on Genesis 22:5 “He said to His servants, ‘Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.'”
Abraham endures a great testing in Genesis 22. God asks him to give up his most prized possession. His long-awaited promise from God Himself. He asks for His obedience to sacrifice Isaac as a burnt offering.
If you’re familiar with this story you know that God doesn’t allow Abraham to sacrifice Isaac. Instead at the last minute, God provides a sacrifice. Allowing Abraham to remove Isaac from the altar and instead accept God’s sacrifice.
God provides the sacrifice. He only asked for Abraham’s undivided and absolute obedience. He does the same for us today. In verse 5, imagine today’s children of God (His servants) taking the place of Abraham’s servants. They walked faithfully beside Abraham up to a point, and then Abraham continued on doing the work only He could do.
We are God servants, and He has done the hardest part of redeeming and restoring us back to Him in our place. As His servants, our job is not to save others. We can only direct them to the one who can. Our responsibility is to stay close enough to Him that we can hear and obey all that He says do. We will share Him and His work in our lives, we will stay in close communion with Him on behalf of others, and we will lead people to an appointed place on this journey towards Christ. But then He will do the work of saving their souls by His great sacrifice. Just like with Abraham, God will provide the sacrifice necessary and finish the work of providing a way for His people’s restoration to Himself.
Prayer: God thank you for this great picture of drastic obedience from your word. Lord thank you that you have done the “heavy lifting” as far as restoring your people to you. God give me the desire and joy of walking with you, staying close, and answering your call to obey. Thank you that you allow me to even participate that much in the process of leading another to you. What a gift. Help me always to treasure it. In Jesus’ name amen.
Application: In Genesis 22 we see God really define the role of a servant. What are 3-4 traits of being God’s servant do you see? ( Refer back to Abraham’s servants, Abraham, and even Isaac)
Memorize Matthew 11:29-30 “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
