Genesis 17 Crazy Breakthrough

Chapter of the Day: Read Genesis 17.

Meditate on Genesis 17:17 Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?

In Genesis 17 we see God do big things. God changes Abram to Abraham & Sarai to Sarah. Up until this point the couple wrestled and struggled and persevered in the faith. They were not perfect as we saw in the previous chapter however they continued to walk in obedience.

As God reviews the terms of His covenant with Abraham and His expectations of Abraham’s faithfulness we see a breakthrough occur. God tells Abraham of the son that is sure to be born to him through Sarah.

At this point, Abraham and Sarah seem to have surrendered to the waiting of this part of the promise from God to them. Maybe they had gotten so old they no longer even considered it an option. God did not forget though, and his would become a monumental moment in the faith of Abraham and Sarah.

God’s timeline is often much different than our expected timeline. It is helpful to keep in mind that for glory to be brought to God an event cannot be explained away by human doing. God always seeks to set His people apart, and oftentimes that is exactly how He is glorified. God’s promise of a child to a ninety-year-old woman and one-hundred-year-old man-made even Abraham laugh to himself. Imagine what the surrounding witnesses and even us as readers today think when we read this event.

Let us not become discouraged in the timeline. God is working out marvelous glory in your life of distinction. Your separateness, suffering, and your waiting are not in vain. They allow you and those around you to marvel at and be a part of His mighty glory.

Prayer: God thank you for this story. Thank you that you do things in our lives that make us look insane to the world around us. Thank you for the reminder that it is my distinctness that brings you glory, and that same distinctness points others to your power. God help me to embrace the implications of a life that glorifies you. Help me patiently endure waiting, suffering and pain that comes from a life that seeks to glorify you. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Application: What is something that God has done in your life that makes you feel like you stick out like a sore thumb?

Challenge yourself to think of ways that it may be bringing glory to Him.

If you’re waiting on a promise from God how can God possibly be glorified in this situation? Is there someone you can encourage with your story?

Could you ask someone to begin praying with you for this promise to come to fruition? How might their faith be increased when they see God fulfill it?
