Genesis 16 Consequences & Higher Ways

Chapter of the Day: Read Genesis 16.

Meditate on Genesis 16:1-2 “Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; 2 So she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”

Imagine Sarai behind the scenes seeing Abram and herself aging. She probably begins to think there is no way God is going to use her to fulfill this great promise of many descendants.

So she does what people do. She tries to fix the problem in her own strength. Sarai gets the bright idea to give her slave Hagar to Abram to build the great family that he has been promised. However, that was not God’s plan for this family.

Hagar was a slave from Egypt. Abram probably acquired her when he fled Cannan during the famine, against God’s directions. God gives us boundaries because He can see consequences that are inevitable in situations like the one we see unfolding in Genesis 16.

Hagar and her relationship would become strained. However, we see how God can still use this bad situation to bring about good. He reveals himself to Hagar in the desert and blesses her with an abundance of descendants as well.

All throughout this chapter, we see people who are frustrated at their circumstances, and God’s timing. They foolishly attempt to fix the situations they face, only making matters worse. However, God meets them in their suffering. He graciously allows their sin to serve them into a closer relationship & knowledge of  Him.

He does the same for His people today. If you’re frustrated and wrestling with something trust that you can bring it before God to mend, and if you’ve already rushed ahead trust that He will still use it for good.

Prayer: God thank you that you meet me in my mess. Thank you that your ways are higher than my ways. Thank you that you protect me from the consequences of my sin when I run ahead of you. God help me to yield to your spirit. Help me to see how my consequences hurt the people I love. Please continue to protect me and use the places where I fall short for good and let it bring you glory. In Jesus’ name amen.

Application: Is there an area of your life where God is telling you no or to trust Him?

What is God protecting you from in your waiting right now?

Who is He protecting in keeping you in His plan?

How can you trust God more deeply with this circumstance today?  memorize

Memorize Isaiah 55:9 “For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.”

How can you trust God more deeply with this circumstance today?
