Meditate on Genesis 14:22 But Abraham said to the king of Sodom, “With a raised hand I have sworn an oath to the Lord, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, that I will accept nothing belonging to you, not even a thread or the strap of a sandal so that you will never be able to say, ‘I have made Abram rich.'”
In chapter 14 we see God call Abram into battle. He is up against five kingdoms who have overthrown four kingdoms in the land. They have also taken captive Abram’s nephew Lot.
Abram hears word of the events and he gathers an army of 318 men to go against the five kingdoms. He completes his battle plan in victory and returns with Lot and all of his possessions to be met by a priest of the God Most High.
The priest in the presence of the witnesses of other nations blesses Abram and praises God. Abram responds with a tithe. Then as a symbol of his thanks, the King of Sodom tells Abram to take all the plunder from the battle. However, Abram declines.
Abram shows tremendous growth in faith in this event. This is the same Abram who previously had left the land God was calling him to out of fear they wouldn’t have enough food. Now in the presence of a great crowd of witnesses, Abram steps into his faith as well as a life of distinction.
God calls his people to bring glory to his name so that we can be great witnesses to the people around us that are in desperate need of His salvation. Sometimes this means He will call us to battle to show His strength. Other times it can be as simple as not participating in a “cultural norm” to show that He provides for us. Either way, we see that He blesses our obedience and our lives get to be a great testimony to His goodness.
Prayer: God thank you that you call me to a life of distinction so that others can know your character. Thank you that you are with me during the battle, and you meet me afterward with blessing and rejuvenation. Help me Lord to be okay with the implications of turning down the world’s ways to embrace the life you have for me. In Jesus’ name amen.
Application: Pray and ask God to reveal to you any areas where He would have you abstain from something the world views as normal so that you can glorify Him in your distinction. Maybe it is your finances or maybe it is how you choose to parent.
If something immediately comes to mind jot it down.
Memorize Jeremiah 32:38 “They will be my people, and I will be their God.”
