Genesis 13 Greater Security

Chapter of the Day: Read Genesis 13.

Meditate on Genesis 13: 14-15  “The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, ‘Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. 15 All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever.'”

In chapter 13 we see Abram return from Egypt. Remember he went to Egypt out of fear that he would not have enough food due to the famine in the land of Canaan.  Abram did not trust that God would provide for him in the land he had brought him and his family, and he also had allowed Lot to tag along when God clearly stated to leave ALL his family in chapter 12. We see him return very wealthy from Egypt, and it isn’t long before the two areas of Abram’s disobedience start to cause issues.

Lot and Abram’s great accumulation began to cause strife, quarreling, and eventually division.  Abram asks Lot to part from him giving him his choice of the land before them. Lot chooses to take himself and his great abundance to a part of the land that resembled Egypt, and he ends up making camp near a wicked people group. We will see more of that unfold in the coming chapters.

Take notice that when Abram finally rids himself of the distractions, and his actions line up with God’s calling we see God speak to Him. Chapter 13 verse 14 & 15 says after Lot parted from him to look around that God was going to give all the land to Abram and his descendants.

Abram was initially distracted and enticed as his nephew Lot with what he could gain now. Not much different than our current striving for security here on earth. However, once the distractions were removed we see God give Abram a grander vision for his life. A kingdom sized promise that would be much more impactful and secure than his current status of wealth. God was going to give Abram and his descendants a great land that would be theirs forever.  We too have that great promise but are we willing to give up temporary security and distractions to hear what God has to say?

Prayer: God thank you that what you have for us is eternal and it is far more worthy of a cause than the temporary pleasures of comfort and security that this world has to offer. God be my strength to lay down the distractions and live a purposeful life built upon your words to me and promises. In Jesus’ name amen.

Application: What is an area in your life where you are not fully trusting Jesus? (finances, security, provision for your family)

Is there a distraction that may be keeping you from hearing God’s grander promises for your life?

Memorize Ephesians 3:20 ” Now all glory to God who is able through His mighty power at work within us to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.”
