Meditate on Genesis 11:6 “The Lord said, ‘If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them'”
In this chapter we see the nations spread out from Noah’s line. At the time they all speak one language. The people get a bright idea to work together to build a city and a name for themselves.
In verse six we see God working through the issue with the people’s choice. God doesn’t want the people to build a name for themselves. Getting people to look to you is offering them dry crumbs in light of eternity. In His mercy, He wants them to realize that apart from Him they can do nothing worthwhile. However, the problem with people is that they are made in His image and when they can all work together they can actually accomplish a lot of things. So God scatters and confuses them.
We are the same way today. We are perfectly capable of doing a lot of things. We have even seen that when apart of a larger team we can do even more incredible things. But we have to ask ourselves the question. Is what I am building the most important thing? Does the name (or tower) that I build make me look good or does it point people to the only thing that can save their life? Truth is if what I am building doesn’t point to Jesus then I labor in vain. The Tower of Babel wasn’t going to get the people any closer to heaven than the empires we intend to build today will either. Jesus is the way. Let whatever we build point others to Him.
Prayer: God I pray that you search my heart, my desires, the work of my hand. Show me where what I build makes much of me and little of you. Scatter that work, Jesus. Help me desire to live a life, work a job, speak words that point others to your salvation Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Application: The challenge here is simple if people look at your life (career, friends, choices) do they see Jesus or do they see you?
If the answer is you, what needs to change so that you can point people to the only thing that matters and make it the highest priority in your life?
Memorize Matthew 6:33 “Seek first the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.”
