Meditate on Genesis 4:5 “…but on Cain and his offering, He did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry and his face was downcast.”
In Genesis 4 we see the account of the murder between the first brothers. Reading Cain and Abel’s story it almost seems trivial the reason that Cain would draw Abel into a field and kill him over God showing his brother’s sacrifice favor. God even takes the time to address Cain’s emotions personally and reminds him that if he should just continue to do what is right he will be accepted. Cain however, does not heed the warning and lets his emotions go unchecked.
This is a trap we still fall prey to today. It is too easy to compare ourselves to those on the left and the right and take our eyes off what God is telling us to do. When we compare our walk with the Lord to another person’s and when it seems God’s favor is upon them more than us we allow unbridled emotions to spring up. God reminds us today that if left unchecked that anger, jealousy, and hate breeds sin. And sin ALWAYS leads to death.
Heed God’s warning today and remember His words. Genesis 4:6 “….If you do what is right will you not be accepted?” …sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you MUST rule over it.” We have the Holy Spirit inside of us and Jesus already has the victory over our sins. Tap into that power when your emotions feel unsteady.
Prayer: God forgive my sinful nature that is so easily entangled in the sin that is bred from comparison. Help me to remember that I am fearfully and wonderfully made by you for your glory. God be the strength I need to take my eyes off of what is happening with those on my left and right and continue to do what it is you call me to do. Make that clear to me Lord so I can be busy being the part of your body that YOU have gifted me to be. Help me to remember that I am already accepted by you for the works you set for me long before I was born. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Application: What is an area that you are tempted to compare?
Has this created jealousy or other unchecked emotions in your heart?
Pray for God to reveal those areas and help you be on guard against the sin that easily entangles.
Read & pray the following verses:
Hebrews 12:1 “Therefore since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses tot he life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.”
Psalm 139:14-16 “Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous – how well I know it. 15 You watched me being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. 16 You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.”
